What five buyers told us about trusting a skincare ad
The scope
Five one-hour interviews with buyers aged 24–38, each of whom had bought a skincare product after seeing it advertised on Instagram in the previous 90 days. We reviewed screen recordings of their feeds together and asked them to reconstruct, ad by ad, the path to purchase.
The pattern
All five said they believed the dermatologist-style explainer and distrusted the influencer unboxing. Yet four of the five had bought only after seeing both — influencer first, expert second. The sequence, not either ad alone, did the work.
Why it happens
The influencer ad creates awareness and social permission; the expert ad carries the burden of proof. Buyers described the expert clip as “the one that made it make sense”. Distrust of the influencer didn't block the purchase — it raised the bar the second ad had to clear.
The cost
Estimate: across the three ad accounts we have visibility into, creator-only creative runs at roughly 1.6–2× the cost per purchase of a creator-plus-expert pairing. The sample is small, so treat this as directional, not gospel.
The exception
One buyer screenshotted the ingredient list from the expert ad and searched each ingredient before buying. The ad survived verification — and she has repurchased twice. Proof that holds up to a Google search is the whole game.
What we’d do
For every creator brief, commission one 30-second expert explainer against the same claim, and run them sequenced — creator first, expert as retargeting. If your claims can't survive a buyer's search, fix the claims before the creative.
